Manipur Updates : In the Imphal West region of Manipur, militants opened fire on Sunday near Koutruk, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to several others.
A local in the Manipur village, which terrorists attacked on Sunday, killing one and injuring several more, described the terrifying event by claiming to have seen two drones flying over the region just before explosives were thrown. The eyewitness claimed that some of the houses were still on fire.
“Before it detonated the bomb, I observed two drones flying over our village…According to Sunil Ningthoujam, a villager who is connected to one of the victims and the general secretary of the village peace committee, several of the community’s houses are still burning as a result of the explosions, as HT was informed.
In the Kangchup area of the Imphal West district of Manipur, on Sunday, militants used drones to drop grenades and open fire near Koutruk. The result was the death of one woman and the injuries of numerous others, including her daughter. Officials said that the attack happened at 2:00 pm during a shootout between terrorists and security guards that lasted until late at night.
Ngangbam Ongbi Surbala, the victim, was shot in her right arm while visiting her mother’s house with her 11-year-old daughter. According to the police, among the injured were two police officers, a local journalist, and other village residents.
The event occurred in the districts of Kangpokpi and Churachandpur the day after Kuki-Zo organizations staged protest marches against Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
The Manipur police attribute the attack to “Kuki militants.”
In a statement, the Manipur police accused the Kuki insurgents of a “significant escalation” and “commonly used in general warfare” techniques.
Although drone bombs are frequently employed in large-scale conflicts, the recent use of drones to drop explosives on people and security personnel represents a dramatic increase in the usage of these weapons. It is impossible to rule out the engagement of highly qualified experts, perhaps with technical know-how and assistance. The police said on X that they are keeping a close eye on the situation and are ready to handle any emergencies that may come up.
Statement from the Manipur Home Department
In a statement, the Manipur Home Department denounced the incident and described it as “unfortunate.” The state administration has been informed of the regrettable occurrence in which unarmed Koutruk villagers were attacked by Kuki terrorists allegedly employing drones, bombs, and sophisticated weapons. The state administration takes the act of terrorizing defenseless villagers very seriously, as it works tirelessly to restore peace and normalcy to the region,” the statement read.
Such activities of causing “havoc among unarmed villagers” are viewed as a “attempt to derail the the state government’s efforts to establish peace in the state,” according to the state home department.
“The state government has already taken up immediate action to control the situation and to punish those who were involved in the attack on Koutruk Village, Imphal West,” it added.
